Overall rating 4.5/5First launched in the UK in 2011, the Ypsilon is heavily based on the Italian Lancia Ypsilon, bringing a blend of continental style and value. Throughout its run until 2015, the Ypsilon saw minimal changes but remained popular with those after a striking alternative to mainstream superminis like the Ford Ka or Fiat 500. What sets it apart is the five-door layout – rare in city cars of this size – and high comfort level. The Ypsilon is most at home in busier streets, making parking and manoeuvring a breeze. Fuel economy is a key strength, especially with the 1.3-litre diesel engine. Inside, there’s a spacious feel for such a small footprint, with high seats that give great visibility and a 245-litre boot space that beats competitors'.
The Chrysler Ypsilon comes equipped with standard brake features like ABS and EBD, along with front driver, passenger and front curtain airbags. It hasn't been tested by Euro NCAP.
Choose between three engines: a 0.9-litre petrol, 1.2-litre petrol or 1.3-litre diesel. Being a two-cylinder turbo engine, the 0.9-litre option is particularly advanced with the ability to reach 60mph in a little over 11 seconds. All provide decent running costs and reasonable emissions for their class, especially if you press the eco button.
Standard technology is fairly straightforward but does feature a City button that lightens the steering to help with tight corners and parking. Higher trims can come with Bluetooth connectivity and upgraded sound systems, along with Magic Parking, which can automatically steer you into narrow spaces.
Fuel economy is one of the Ypsilon’s strengths. The 1.2-litre petrol typically achieves around 55 mpg, but the 1.3 diesel has an average fuel consumption of just over 74 mpg. Of course, this depends on driving style and maintenance.
Look for a full service history and check that all electronics work properly. Remember to inspect seat fabrics and plastics for wear, too. Consider The AA Vehicle Inspection of the used car you're interested in – it'll deliver a detailed report within 24 hours for added peace of mind.
The Ypsilon is generally reliable if well-maintained. Mechanically, these cars share a lot with the Fiat 500 and Panda, so parts are easy enough to source. Some have reported occasional electrical niggles, but regular servicing should keep most issues at bay.
