Overall rating 4/5The Abarth 500 took the regular Fiat 500 and injected a lot of performance and spirit. Later versions, called 595, built on this with some added power and a more focused setup, making this car a great option for drivers who like a car with bundles of character that can still easily be used on more ‘regular’ trips.
With its compact proportions, the Abarth 595 is easy to park and live with, while a good level of standard equipment makes it a very tempting used purchase.
The Abarth 595 gets a full electronic stability control system as well as a full suite of airbags dotted throughout the cabin. You’ll also find ISOFIX child-seat mounting points on the rear seats, too. Anti-lock brakes are equipped for all models, too. There’s also a handy hill-hold function which can help to make hill starts easier.
There’s just one engine option on the Abarth 595 - a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit. A number of models use the same engine and bring different outputs. For instance, the base 595 has slightly less power than a later Essesse version. Most cars come equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, though an automatic is also available on some models.
The Abarth 595 comes equipped with all the key equipment you could need such as Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning and adjustable wing mirrors. Look out for later models as these gained even more standard equipment such as climate control, upgraded headlights and parking sensors.
You should be able to see around 47mpg combined with the Abarth 595, while automatic versions improve this ever-so-slightly to 48mpg.
As a performance car, there’s a good chance that the Abarth 595 will have been driven briskly at some point in its life. As a result, we’d check for any accident damage which could include mismatched panels, or areas of bodywork which have been resprayed. For a more detailed report of any car that you’re looking at, then try an AA Vehicle Inspection. With it, a trained mechanic will take a look at the car and highlight any negatives that they may encounter both inside and outside of the car.
The Abarth 595 is a reliable option, though we’d make sure that any car you’re looking at has a good service history and lots of receipts for work and repairs. Again, an AA Vehicle Inspection can help to add extra clarity when purchasing a used car.
