New Renault Megane debuts today

Visitors to the show might wonder why there are some random-looking numbers etched on to the rear side window.

The digits are in fact the lap time (eight minutes, 17 seconds) that the R26 recorded on the famous Nurburgring circuit – a record for a front wheel drive production car. The circuit outline has also been subtly etched on the car.

When the vehicle is launched in car showrooms there will just be 450 of them, 230 of them to be found in the UK, all priced at £22,990 on the road.

Those lucky enough to own one will notice that the car is 23kg lighter than the Megane Renaultsport 230 F1 Team R26 – the vehicle it most closely resembles.

Since the launch in April 2004, the family of Megane Renaultsport has sold more than 20,000 units in nearly 30 countries.

The new R26.R has been designed to offer customers who enjoy track days a car with an unrivalled performance per pound ratio and the company hopes that it will become an enthusiast’s icon.
