Ineos launched its automotive division in 2022, with this petrochemical company entering into carmaking with its Grenadier. The brainchild of Ineos owner Jim Ratcliffe, the Grenadier aimed to take up the space left by the original Land Rover Defender, albeit with a few modern touches.
Backed by BMW engines and gearboxes, the Grenadier has been designed as an out-and-out workhorse capable of tackling difficult terrain and poor conditions without breaking a sweat. Currently, the Grenadier is the only car offered by Ineos, though you can also get it as a pick-up truck in the Quartermaster specification.
The Ineos Grenadier comes equipped with a range of advanced safety systems such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking and intelligent speed assist. The Grenadier is also equipped with a broad number of airbags, too, covering all areas of the cabin. A standard-fit driver awareness system can detect fatigue in the person behind the wheel, too.
You can expect to get around 20mpg from the petrol-powered Ineos Grenadier, or around 26.9mpg from the diesel version. Petrol-powered Greandiers use a 3.0-litre straight-six unit, while diesel versions use a 3.0-litre turbocharged alternative. Both have automatic gearboxes as standard.
Prices for used Grenadier cars start from £39,995 for a car with average mileage and some optional extras. At the other end of the scale, prices head up to £80,000 for a limited-edition Belstaff model with low mileage.
Currently, Ineos does not offer any hybrid or electric models.
Ineos cars are still very new, so there shouldn’t be too many concerns regarding reliability. They’re backed by BMW technology, too, with both the engines and gearboxes coming from the German firm. They’re tried-and-tested engines as well, so there shouldn’t be too many issues regarding their reliability - though consistent servicing will always help with this.
Grenadiers are designed to be workhorses, so we’d check underneath a car to see if there has been any damage suffered as a result of off-road driving. You may want to see if the tyres have taken on any damage as well, such as cuts or grazes to the sidewalls that can often occur when travelling through rugged terrain.
