Overall rating 3.5/5The Dodge Caliber was introduced to the UK in 2006 as a different take on the hatchback, blending SUV-inspired looks with the practicality of a small family car. Its chunky design and tall seating position make it feel more adventurous than traditional rivals like the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra. Key features include a spacious cabin, sliding rear seats, and a boot that’s easy to load. Although the interior isn't as plush as some European competitors, the amount of standard equipment on offer makes up for it. There is also a Volkswagen-sourced diesel engine option available, which is ideal for economical motorway cruising.
All Dodge Caliber models include ABS, electronic stability control, front and side airbags and ISOFIX mounts for child seats. The Caliber achieved a four out of five rating in Euro NCAP crash testing.
The Caliber has a range of engines including a 1.8- and more powerful 2.0-litre petrol. The star of the show is the 2.0-litre diesel taken from Volkswagen – it hits 0 to 62mph in just under nine seconds and makes for an easygoing drive.
Equipment levels vary, but even basic models have electric windows, a CD/radio and central locking. Higher trims add the likes of air conditioning and cruise control. Some even include a cool audio feature called MusicGate, which sees sound project from the back for outdoor gatherings.
The popular 2.0-litre diesel returns around 47mpg, while the 1.8 petrol manages approximately 38mpg. Real-world figures can be lower, especially on older cars or those with patchy service history.
Look for a full service history and check the operation of all electrical features – older Calibers may have electrical niggles, including issues with windows and central locking. Suspension wear and interior trim damage are also things to be aware of. For extra reassurance, consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Caliber’s engines come from brands like Volkswagen or factories co-owned with the likes of Hyundai, so should be pretty reliable. Parts are still available, but you may wait longer for some items compared to more common hatchbacks.
