If you’re after something compact and light-hearted that's suitable for everyday use, the two-seater Daihatsu Copen is hard to beat. Launched in the UK in 2003, it offers cheeky styling and a clever metal roof that folds away at the press of a button for a quieter, more insulated drive. The first iteration had a 0.7-litre turbo engine replaced in 2007 by a more economical 1.3-litre version. Both engines are enjoyable to drive, especially on country roads. Tidy handling, low running costs and a surprisingly comfortable interior make it a good rival to the likes of the early Mazda MX-5. Thanks to Daihatsu’s reputation, it’s also reassuringly reliable.
