Overall rating 4/5With deep, comfortable seats, impressive technology and old-school craftsmanship, the Mulsanne stands out as the last word in automotive refinement. Made for comfort, elegance and performance, it offers plush upholstery, fine woodwork and a serene cabin. Since its 2009 launch, it has competed with the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in luxury. A 2016 update improved infotainment, added a front-end redesign, and enhanced comfort. Available in standard, Extended Wheelbase, and sporty Speed versions, all powered by Bentley’s 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8, it features opulent craftsmanship, vast interior space, commanding road presence, and takes 400 hours to handcraft.
Bentley Mulsannes are equipped with advanced safety features such as front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Curtain airbags and stability control are also standard. That said, the Mulsanne has not been crash-tested by Euro NCAP, so official safety ratings aren't available.
Every Bentley Mulsanne uses Bentley’s celebrated 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine. Early models deliver 505bhp, while the sportier Mulsanne Speed is tuned to 530bhp, cutting the 0–62mph time to under 5 seconds. There are no diesel or hybrid options – just refined, old-school power.
Earlier Mulsannes featured a traditional infotainment system, which was upgraded in 2016 to a sharper, quicker unit with an 8-inch touchscreen and improved usability. All cars include sat nav, Bluetooth and a premium audio system. Some feature rear-seat tablets and a UK-made Naim stereo system.
The Bentley Mulsanne’s V8 engine means thirst comes as standard. Expect an official average economy figure of around 18-20mpg – much lower in town or on short trips. CO₂ emissions are high, so annual running costs are something to be well aware of before you buy.
Check for a full Bentley service history, as costs are significant and good maintenance is vital. Ensure all electronics and infotainment features work, as repairs can be costly. Extended Wheelbase versions may have unique trim or internal features to consider. It’s always wise to get an expert opinion – check out The AA Vehicle Inspection service.
Bentley’s focus on craftsmanship means the Mulsanne is built to very high standards, but running costs and parts prices reflect its luxury category. As with many complex luxury cars, electrical and suspension issues can occur. Regular professional maintenance helps avoid trouble and ensures a smooth ownership experience.
