Launched in 2024, the Hyundai Inster marks the Korean brand’s entry into the rapidly growing electric city car segment. Designed to appeal to urban drivers and young families alike, the Inster combines the practicality of a crossover with the efficiency and low running costs of a fully electric drivetrain. Compact yet surprisingly spacious, it aims to deliver advanced technology, modern styling, and accessible pricing to a broad range of buyers. It’s positioned below the Kona Electric in Hyundai’s line-up, and competes with other small electric cars such as the Fiat 500e and MINI Electric.
If you are seeking an affordable, electric urban crossover with plenty of style and tech then the Hyundai Inster should be on your shopping list. Its compact size makes it a breeze to drive and park, visibility is good and it has generous standard equipment, with a long warranty. Boot space is on the smaller side, though, and its performance won’t set pulses racing. But as a practical, well-equipped and environmentally friendly city runabout, it has plenty of merit.

The Hyundai Inster is offered exclusively as a pure electric vehicle, with a choice of two battery sizes. The Standard Range ‘01’ model features a 42 kWh battery paired with a 95bhp (70kW) electric motor, delivering 0-62 mph in 11.7 seconds.
The Long Range version, fitted to the ‘02’ and Inster Cross models, ups the battery capacity to 49 kWh and the output to 115bhp (85 kW), trimming the 0–62 mph sprint to 10.5 seconds and extending the WLTP range to 220 miles, which is one of the most generous ranges in the class.
Both variants use a single-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, offering instant torque for nippy acceleration in urban traffic. The Inster’s electric powertrain provides smooth, quiet progress, while rapid charging capability means a 10–80% top-up takes as little as 30 minutes on a suitable fast charger.
The Inster delivers a relaxed and fuss-free driving experience, tailored to urban motoring. Its compact size and light steering make it agile in tight spaces, while the elevated driving position provides a good view of the road ahead. Acceleration is instant and silent, with enough punch for typical urban and suburban journeys – though on longer journeys it can feel a bit strained and isn’t hugely efficient.
Ride comfort is good for a car of this size, with the suspension tuned to absorb the bumps and potholes commonly found on British town and city routes. The Inster is stable at motorway speeds, though some wind and road noise is apparent at higher speeds.
Visibility is excellent, aided by large windows and slim pillars, and all trims include rear parking sensors, with a reversing camera and 360-degree system available on higher specifications.
With its short wheelbase and supple suspension, the Inster feels nimble and composed around town. Body roll is apparent but far from alarming in corners, and the steering is responsive, making it easy to thread through traffic or navigate multi-storey car parks.
Although there are no selectable driving modes beyond the standard and eco settings, the Inster’s predictable handling and compact turning circle make it a perfect companion for urban and suburban driving.
While not designed for spirited driving, the Inster feels secure and reassuring, with regenerative braking helping to recoup energy in stop-start traffic and adding to overall efficiency.
Despite its compact exterior, the Inster’s cabin is cleverly packaged to maximise space and comfort. There’s ample head and legroom for four adults, and it’ll cope just about as a five-seater for shorter trips.
The dashboard is dominated by a pair of high-resolution digital displays: a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a matching infotainment touchscreen on Premium and Ultimate trims, both featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Materials are robust and easy to clean, though hard plastics are prevalent in lower trim levels. The seats are supportive and offer a raised driving position, while the logical layout of controls makes everything functional and easy to use.
Ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, and heated front seats are available on higher trims. Isofix mounts are standard on the outer rear seats for child seats.
The Hyundai Inster offers 238 litres of boot space with all seats in place – enough for a weekly shop, a couple of small suitcases or a small pushchair.
Fold the 60:40 split rear bench and capacity expands to a pretty impressive 1,050 litres, making it surprisingly versatile for a city car. The boot opening is wide and low, with a false floor for extra hidden storage and easy loading of bulky items.
Inside, there’s generous storage, including large door bins, cupholders, a central cubby, and a deep glovebox. Higher trim levels (from ‘02’ upwards) add useful touches such as wireless charging and extra USB-C ports for rear passengers.
All Inster models come decently equipped, with the entry-level trim including air conditioning, LED headlights, cruise control, keyless entry, and a suite of active safety features. Moving up to the ‘02’ brings upgraded 10.25-inch displays, wireless phone connectivity, alloy wheels, reversing camera, and automatic climate control.
The Inster Cross trim adds heated seats, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, 360-degree cameras, and distinctive styling elements, including chunky front bumpers and an electric glass sunroof.
Options are limited, but include a heat pump, panoramic sunroof (on ‘01’ and ‘02’ models), and an advanced safety pack with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The Inster is available in three main trims: ‘01’, ‘02’, and Inster Cross.
The entry-level ‘01’ trim is designed to provide all the essentials for daily driving, prioritising value and safety. Standard equipment includes a digital instrument cluster, air conditioning, LED daytime running lights, and a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. Safety features comprise six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, driver attention warning, and traffic sign recognition.
Stepping up to the ‘02’ trim adds more advanced technology and refinement. The range-topping Inster Cross trim adds heated seats and steering wheel, leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof, as well as rugged exterior styling features. The full suite of Hyundai’s driver assistance technologies is standard, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, offering maximum safety and convenience.
Colour choices range from classic Atlas White and Abyss Black to more expressive hues like Meta Blue, Vibrant Green, and Tangerine Orange, allowing buyers to personalise their Inster to suit their style.
The Hyundai Inster is built on a modern platform with a strong focus on occupant protection and active safety. Euro NCAP testing for the Inster is pending, but it is expected to perform well.
