On the Volkswagen stand at Geneva the Passat TSI concept car will demonstrate the EcoFuel system which will mix petrol power with natural gas economy.
A 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS engine features both a supercharger and a turbocharger operating sequentially to provide relatively high power outputs from a small capacity engine.
The EcoFuel meets the ‘Euro 5’ standards of greater economy and lower emissions. With a top speed of 130 mph and the capability to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 9.7 seconds, this makes it a practical road vehicle.
Volkswagen plans to sell a saloon and estate version in mainland Europe by the end of 2008 yet has still to announce a launch date for sales in the UK.
