Expert Opinion

The C'eed was the turning point for Kia offering customers a great product with 7yrs warranty. The car has won numerous awards from the motor industry for the overall package offered to customers. It's amazing how you can buy a 3 year old C'eed and drive away with more warranty than some manufacturers offer for brand new cars. The Specification levels are easy to follow as 1 is the entry level followed by 2, 3 and 4. The drive, spec and warranty are hard to ignore and would highly recommend a visit to a Kia dealership.

About Kia Ceed

First launched in 2006, the Kia Cee'd is a family hatchback which is a world away from the cheap and cheerful cars the Korean manufacturer was, up until a few years ago, best known for.

Stylish, efficient and fun, the Cee'd was Kia's first genuinely competitive car, and while it might not be quite as good as the class best, it is more than simply a cut-price alternative.

Why buy a used Ceed?

A trademark Kia grille fronts the Cee'd and, coupled with chunky headlights and an aerodynamic, swooped body, make it a sleek car with genuine good looks. Inside quality is high, and while there might not be quite as many mod cons as in its higher priced rivals, all models are well equipped with air con, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. All but the entry level models come with alloys, parking sensors and LED running lights.

In practicality terms is matches the class best - confounding its compact exterior. Its boot offers a 380 litre capacity at its smallest and 1,318 litres with the rear seats folded down. Upgrade to the Sportwagon estate model however, and boot space reaches a cavernous 1,664 litres. With a long wheelbase the cabin is equally as roomy and allows four adults to travel in comfort, but can hold five for shorter distances.

The four engine options (two petrol and two diesel), are competent if not particularly excellent, but there's still plenty to like in the punchy performance of the 1.6 litre, 126bhp oil-burner. Offering strong low down pull, the top of the range diesel is a good motorway cruiser and smooth revving engine, although it isn't particularly dynamic. Returning 68.9mpg and 109g/km CO2 emissions however, it is an efficient engine option, and one which can be made even more so in EcoDynamics form (where 76.3mpg and 97g/km is offered).

Ride and refinement are both surprisingly excellent and make the Cee'd a car which copes very well on the motorway at high speeds. It lacks in dynamics and driving flair - especially compared to the class leaders the Ford Focus and the VW Golf - but it handles with enough accuracy and composure to keep it interesting on the road.

The Kia Cee'd isn't quite the market leading hatchback to blow all the others out the water, but nor is it a cut-price alternative with little going for it. Instead it is a stylish, affordable and reliable small family car which makes the existing hatchback leaders sit up and take notice.

What should I look for when buying a used Ceed?

What to look for in a Kia Ceed
  • Once the engine has warmed up, check for any blue or black smoke coming from the exhaust. If this is the case, or if there is a loss of power or a whistling noise when driving there could be a problem with the turbo and would likely need to be replaced. Make sure that the Exhaust Gas Re-circulation is replaced at the same time.
  • Check that all relevant paperwork is available and that it has a full service history. Petrol servicing on the Cee'd is after 10,000 miles for the first year and 12,500 thereafter, while on the diesel it is every 12,500.
  • With the engine running turn on the air conditioning and check that it is cold. If it is not there could be a problem with the condenser, which may need to be replaced.
  • Before taking it on a test drive check the clutch to see where its biting point is. If it is near the end of the pedal's limit it will indicate that the clutch is near the end of its life - something which is expensive to replace.
  • Standard issue radios are known to struggle for signal in Cee'ds, so check that the radio is in good working order. Models older than three years are particularly susceptible to this.
  • Diesel engines are particularly prone to heavy wear on the front tyres. Check that these are not overly worn, nor worn on one side more than the other (a sign of tracking issues).
  • If there is any noise coming from the suspension when covering uneven terrain then it could be a sign that the front anti roll bushes need to be replaced.
