Toyota’s new, eco-friendly Valvematic petrol engines promise greater power with reduced emissions. The engine, coupled with the Multidrive S automatic transmission, makes for a great drive, with clean shifts and a comfortable, easy drive. The manual version is also responsive and offers equally good economy.

Those looking to make undertake plenty of motorway driving the 2.2-litre manual diesel versions returns a combined cycle economy of just under 45 mpg.

Inside, the Avensis is a comfortable car that is at its best when it is on the motorway. With clear, high quality instruments and a very comfortable driving position, the interior of the Avensis is also very easy on the eye.

On urban roads, the Avensis is reasonably quiet, and even at speed and on uneven surfaces, there’s very little noise. It’s incredibly hushed when at cruising speeds on motorways.

In terms of security, the Avensis is near the top of the market. Deadlocks and an alarm are fitted across the range, while safety equipment includes active seat head restraints, a stability control system to help the driver in case of emergency; and front, side and curtain airbags. There’s even an airbag under the steering column to protect the knees of the driver in a crash.

In the cabin, the Avensis is particularly spacious, and this makes it feel like an authentic estate. With a long, flat loadspace and a huge boot, there is plenty of space no matter what needs to be transported.

This particular model, finished in Avant-grade Bronze Metallic, is a 14 plate, and has only covered 1,000 miles. Fitted with a 2.0 litre manual diesel engine, it is part of the Icon range.
