Expert Opinion

The reincarnated Mini has been universally adored and fawned over by both critics and customers, but it largely remains priced out of the entry-level hatchback market, fitting better into the more premium sector of compact cars. The Mini First was launched to address the need for a more affordable model, and at just over £11,000 from new, it certainly achieves this. With the same 1.4 litre engine as in the Mini One, the First manages decent levels of power (although offering less horsepower than the One), which along with its go-kart-like handling make it a nimble and exciting small car to drive around city streets. Inside there are fewer mod cons than in the rest of the range, but considering its smaller price tag, this is to be expected. Not quite the car the Mini One is, the First is an impressive and affordable Mini.
