Since the government has ordered car showrooms (and other non-essential businesses) to close their doors because of coronavirus, it’s made buying a car a bit harder than usual.
However, if you’re an essential worker or you really need a vehicle to get around in, it’s still possible to buy a car with contactless methods from the dealers that are still operating.
But if you’d rather wait until showrooms and forecourts reopen, and go for a test drive before buying, what steps can you do in the meantime? Here’s how to plan ahead for your next car.
Do your research
The country’s in lockdown, and you’ve probably never had so much time on your hands. So, now’s a good time to start researching your next vehicle.
If you’ve already decided on the make and model, start browsing our marketplace to find the model in the right colour, spec and with the right options for you.
If you haven’t decided on the car, though, you could use this time to research models that might work for you instead – read buyers guides and our reviews from real owners. These can give you a great insight into what these cars are like to live with on a day-to-day basis.
Speak to dealers
While the vast majority of car dealers might have closed their showrooms, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t still working. Many will still be contactable by phone or via email, and they’ll be advertising the cars they have for sale, too.
If you’re interested in a car, give them a call. Even if they’re working remotely, they’ll still be more than happy to answer any questions about it.
They might even be able to arrange a contactless sale and delivery, if you want the car immediately. But if you’d rather test drive the car first, you’ll be at the front of the queue once the lockdown restrictions lift and showrooms reopen.
Ask for walkaround videos
If you want to see in-depth videos of a car, or view any particular features, you should ask your dealer to see if they’re able to do a walkaround video. Many already do this and are happy to send over any additional information about the vehicle.
Enquire about finance
If you’re going to be financing your next car, now’s a great opportunity to look at how much you could expect to pay on a monthly basis for a new vehicle. Use our dedicated Car Finance to easily calculate payments. You can select the amount you want to borrow, for how long and enter your credit score to see what your monthly payments are likely to be.
That’ll give you a good idea of affordability. You can easily apply for finance with us, too.
