Whether it’s your dog shedding hairs, the kids dropping crumbs, or those summer day trips to the beach with sandy or muddy shoes, your car can quickly become messy.
If you’re thinking of selling your car or you’ve just bought a new vehicle, you’ll want to keep it in tip-top condition. There are plenty of valet services that’ll professionally clean your car but if you prefer to do it yourself, we’ve rounded up some of the best car vacuum cleaners on the market to keep your vehicle feeling fresh.
Best for: multi-purpose and a stylish design
Dyson V8 Absolute
Top-class design and high performance? This Dyson doesn’t disappoint. Coming in at a hefty £349.99, it’s the priciest model in the list. But is it worth it? The V8 Absolute is a powerful, cordless vacuum with a decent 0.54 litre bin capacity making it ideal for cleaning your car, while also being useful around the house, particularly for stairs. It comes with a handy mini motorised tool that’s less than 150mm wide, which removes ground in dirt and pet hair from upholstery and tight spaces like car footwells.
The impressive suction gets rid of fine dust as well as larger debris first time, while the HEPA filter captures allergens and helps muffle the sound. Battery life is slightly less than the advertised 40 minutes, (it’s more like 20-30 minutes if you’re using the motorised elements), and the battery charge time is a minimum of 4 hours.
Best for: a lightweight option
Hoover Jovis Plus Cordless Handheld
This compact, cordless handheld has up to 20 minutes run time on a full charge giving you enough time to clean the average family car. A dusting brush, flexi hose and crevice tool make it easy to reach under car seats and awkward spots where dirt and mess gather. With a lower price than competitors, at £80, this model from Hoover has a slightly longer charge time of five hours. Bin capacity is similar to the Dyson at 0.51 litres but it’s over a kilo lighter at just 1.28kg.
Best for: getting rid of pet hair
Gtech Multi MK2 K9
The Gtech Multi MK2 K9 was designed with stubborn pet hair in mind. Its powerful suction can pick up even the most ingrained of it, while scented filter tabs leave your car smelling fresh. Battery charge time is 4 hours for 20 minutes cleaning but an hour’s charge will give you a 5 minute burst, which is sometimes enough for a quick in-between clean – perfect for those back seat spills and muddy paw prints.
There’s a handy light to illuminate the area you’re cleaning, which is great for those dark corners and crevices or cleaning in low light. Meant as the Air Ram’s companion handheld, it’s a lightweight 1.6kg with 0.4 litre bin capacity. It comes with a 36cm extension tube to help get around corners and the power brush head tool is great for getting pet hair off your upholstery. You can also buy an additional Car Accessory Kit which includes a soft dusting brush, flexible crevice tool and small upholstery tool.
Best for: value
Black & Decker 10.8V Lithium-Ion Flexi Vacuum
Cordless, handheld and with a flexible, 1.5m long integrated hose, crevice tool and soft brush, this Black & Decker vacuum cleaner has a lithium-Ion battery meaning that suction doesn’t fade as it loses charge. The eco-smart charger turns off once it’s fully charged – after 4 hours – saving electricity. It’s easy to use, weighing in at just 1.47kg with 0.5 litre bin capacity. The charge only lasts for 15 minutes – the shortest time of the cleaners on our list – but at under £80, it’s good value for money.
Best for: large cars
Miele Complete C3 PowerLine
This bagged cylinder vacuum cleaner is less flexible than the handheld, cordless options and requires access to power and off-street parking, but it more than makes up for it with its high-powered suction and massive 4.5 litre bin capacity. You won’t have to worry about the battery running out – and you can comfortably vacuum everything in one go – making it a great choice if you’ve got
a larger car. At around £200, it’s also a good option for anyone who doesn’t want a separate car vacuum cleaner, as it’s suitable for using on larger areas in the home. It has 6 power settings, including a quiet one, and an 11-stage filtration system plus an extra-long cord giving it an 11m cleaning radius.
A good quality vacuum cleaner will help keep your vehicle spotless, whether you’re freshening up after the holidays, preparing to sell or looking to buy a used car that you want to keep in top condition.
