Honesty ‘the only policy’ with car insurance claims

An expert has warned that honesty is the only policy when it comes to getting good car insurance.

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) has reported a rise in the number of cases involving ‘front end fraud’ – a form of insurance scam where an applicant is economical with the truth in order to acquire cheaper insurance.

A particularly devious sub-category of front end fraud is ‘fronting’ – where parents forget their role as moral guardian, to add their offspring to their motor insurance policy as an occasional-named driver, when in reality they are the main driver.

The ABI highlighted that crime doesn’t pay by revealing that one policyholder had their £7,000 claim for a stolen vehicle rejected as he ‘forgot’ to disclose two convictions for driving without insurance.

Nick Starling, the ABI’s Director of general insurance and health, said: “Cheating to get cheaper insurance puts your cover in jeopardy, with potentially disastrous consequences. Being truthful and shopping around will mean that your insurance delivers when you need it, and that you get the best possible deal.”
