The End of Red Lights?

A new SatNav technology developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, could put an end to the stop-start tedium of repeated red lights.

The Cambridge-based university’s new technology advises drivers how to drive to access green lights – both in terms of route and timing. The design would mean drivers could be more energy-efficient as they would not waste fuel when they accelerate away from lights – saving time and money.

The system has been tested in their home town, where lights change at regular intervals AND in Singapore where lights work in sync with traffic flow.

MIT’s new SatNav works out the best speed to avoid a red light, sends the message to the system and alerts the driver. This feedback is based on driver speed – if it looks like the speed and direction of a driver is heading toward a red light, the SatNav advises on an alternative route.
