Could you please try to give a definitive answer why diesel fuel costs more in UK than petrol?

Hello, could you please try to give a definitive answer why diesel fuel costs more in Uk than petrol? Across Europe as a whole it is less expensive (note - not cheaper!) As some examples today, (all prices in Euros) Germany 1.56 vs 1.40, France 1.48 vs 1.29, Portugal 1.60 vs 1.38. UK the other way round 1.54 vs 1.62. I think I already know the answer; we are being taken for a ride . That may be cynical, however. Regards Alan

Diesel is a more expensive product than petrol for a number of reasons but the variations you’ve noted are down to differences in government policy. In the UK the same duty rate applies to both petrol and diesel while many other countries continue to apply a lower rate to diesel.

You can compare VAT and duty rates on both petrol (euro-super 95) and diesel (automotive gasoil) across Europe on the EU website.
