Dear Edmund, I often drive in Germany and when there is no limit and traffic/weather permitting, I drive my car at stop speed i.e. 130mph for extended periods of time - am I causing any damage to the engine? The car is a BMW 118i and at top speed is running at 4400rpm. Thank you in advance LA

Obviously at this speed if anything does go wrong it’ll go very wrong very quickly but if the car’s serviced properly, according to the manufacturer’s schedule, then the car’s only doing what it’s been designed to do.

Tyres must be in good condition with decent tread and set to the appropriate pressures given in the handbook.
