What are the rules for overtaking on a motorway with no hard shoulder?

motorway driving on a four lane motorway what are the rules for over taking if you are on the old hard shoulder. I have been on the motorway in that lane when it is clear in front of me and the other lanes are nose to tail

The normal rules about overtaking and undertaking apply on the new stretches of  ‘smart’ motorway that have no hard shoulder – keep left unless overtaking slower vehicles.

Highway Code (Clause 268) states:

In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right.

The most important rule on a motorway with no hard shoulder is that you must not drive in a lane ‘closed’ by a red X sign.
