What exactly are the rules regarding euro 6 engines being compulsory for new car sales. It is difficult to get consistent authorative information from the internet which refers to criteria such as new type approvals, new reistrations, new models, new cars, etc.

When do the Euro 6 emissions regulations apply to new cars?
It’s quite normal for new vehicle regulations to apply initially to new type approvals (think new models) and then, at some later date to all new cars sold i.e. all first registrations. This reduces the financial burden on car manufacturers by reducing the need to redesign or retrofit old models as regulations develop.
In the case of the Euro 6 emissions regulations the effective dates are September 2014 for new type approvals and September 2015 for all new car sales/first registrations.
