Its launch in 2020 means that the Cupra Leon has lots of the very latest safety features. Tested by Euro NCAP in 2020, the Cupra Leon scored highly across the board with particularly good ratings for adult occupant protection. It gets a large array of safety systems, too, including Automatic Emergency Braking, Speed Assist and Lane Keep Assistance.

From launch, the Cupra Leon was available with a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, alongside a plug-in hybrid which utilised a 1.4-litre engine and could return up to 37 miles of electric-only driving. Later, a less powerful 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine was added to the range, available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Even entry-level cars get a good level of standard equipment, including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and automatic wipers. Inside, there’s a 12-inch infotainment display with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring systems. More equipment-heavy specifications add in features such as heated seats and larger alloy wheels.

Opt for the standard 1.5-litre petrol and you should see between 44.8 and 47.9mpg combined, while the 2.0-litre petrol will achieve closer to 35mpg. The plug-in hybrid, meanwhile, can return up to 217.3mpg, though it’ll need to be kept fully topped up with charge in order to achieve this.

The Cupra Leon is still a relatively new car, so there shouldn’t be too many historic issues to deal with. However, sportier versions with the 2.0-litre engine may have been driven hard, so look out for worn brakes - they’ll feel spongy when applied - and damaged alloys. Again, given the Leon’s age there haven’t been too many causes for concern, though some owners have reported electrical issues surrounding the main infotainment screen.
