A contender in the small SUV class, the Subaru XV is a car pitched towards a more urban and family driver than many of the manufacturer's cars - especially its SUV offerings. Looks-wise it follows fairly safe crossover ground, but has enough charm and personality to maintain the Subaru edge. Either a 1.6 or 2.0 litre petrol engine, or a 2.0 diesel engine is on offer, of which the 2.0 diesel is arguably the better, with plenty of torque, although not quite as much power as the petrols. Although aimed to be 'softer' than the bigger Forester and Outback SUVs, the XV is still able off-road, yet unlike those two, it is comfortably refined on it. Its 380 litre boot isn't the biggest in its class, but comfortable seating and cabin space, and a classy interior, give the XV a suburban, sedate edge. Which, along with a confident drive make it one of the best all-round performing Subarus in years.
