You can find a private sale contract on the main AA website – both you and the buyer can keep a signed copy for your records.

If you’re buying privately it’s a case of ‘buyer beware’ – you get much less legal protection than if buying from a dealer.  The price should be lower than from a dealer but it’s up to you to ask the right questions, have the car inspected thoroughly and to satisfy yourself that the person offering the car for sale is entitled to do so.

There’s lots of advice on our website and I would also recommend that you get a car history check and, unless you have a friend or relative who knows their way around a car, a professional vehicle inspection too.
