Car of the Week: Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer

Berlinetta Mille Miglia Registration

Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, the Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever designed. Produced between 1973 and 1984, this 1980 version is a true one of a kind. Only 929 BB 512s were ever produced, making this specimen one of the most valuable, rare Ferraris in the UK.

Why’s the Berlinetta Boxer Special?

Berlinetta at Mille MigliaIn 1976, the Berlinetta Boxer (or BB as it is affectionately known by Ferrari enthusiasts) was born as a replacement for the 365 GT 4. The BB takes its name from the 512 racer, with the numbers directly referring to the car’s 5 litre, 12 cylinder engine. Interestingly, the 512 was the first car to be named this way, as Ferrari usually named their 12 cylinder road cars after their cylinder displacement.

Production Modifications

For production, the engine was enlarged to 4942 cc, with a largely increased compression ratio of 9:2:1. With slightly less power than its predecessor, the 512 BB still had 360 bhp under the bonnet, with a dual clutch plate handling the additional torque and easing pedal effort.

Technical Specifications

It is notoriously difficult to fully list the specifications of Ferraris from this era, especially because of the discrepancies between the owner’s manual and the workshop manual, both of which are issued by Ferrari. Here’s all you need to know, as listed in the manuals themselves.
