Hai Performance

The SP:01, produced by Detroit Electric and holder of the title ‘world’s fastest pure-electric production sports car’, has received an upbeat reaction at The Shanghai Motor Show.

Able to reach a top speed of 155 mph, the carbon-fibre SP:01 goes from 0-62 in just 3.7 seconds. Perhaps even more impressive is its range: 37 kWh energy storage provides the best part of 190 miles between recharges (tested to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standards). Full charge can be reached in 4.3 hours.

Albert Lam, Detroit Electric’s Chairman and Group CEO enthused:

“The SP:01 will be exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced.  It is a significant development for the international EV sector.  The car will allow us to demonstrate to the world our ability to build an exciting and innovative product, one that displays outstanding performance coupled with strong green credentials, and which delivers an exhilarating driving experience.”

The SP:01 weighs in at just 2,354 lb (consider a Ferrari f430’s 2,954lbs). Rear-wheel-drive and housing a mid-mounted 201 bhp electric motor, the handling is perky to say the least, underpinned as it is by performance-tuned suspension, steering and brake systems. The SP:01 also has all-disc brakes, ABS, ESP and Regenerative Braking technology more akin to Formula One cars – energy used to brake is recycled back into the battery.

In terms of design, the one-piece front is sharply contoured and the rear lights every bit American sports car. The interior is all carbon fibre and leather.

The dash enjoys a ‘SAMI’ (Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment system) offering music player, SatNav, interior lighting adjust and vehicle status (battery, range etc.). The SAMI system can be added to driver’s mobiles so that the user can locate their car, adjust in-car climate settings and check charge levels.

Dual Charge Capability

Impressively, the SP:01 can be used to charge one’s house! Lam explained:

“SP:01 is more than just a sports car, it is a mobile energy unit, allowing the user to use its stored battery energy to power not just the car but even an entire home.  SP:01 is equipped with bi-directional charge and discharge capability, allowing it to release its stored electrical energy to power a home.”

The dual-directional charge can be used in the case of a Revolution-style (American Lost-type series) global power failure. The SP:01’s battery detects grid power failure and allows the user to restore power to the home using its stored energy.

Though limited edition and just two seats, the SP:01 has proved popular at China’s leading automotive event, earning an impressive 35 orders within the first hour of going on sale. The price of this lean, green (orange) flying machine? A couple of shekels over £130,000.

Detroit Electric will produce two other high-performance cars by the end of 2014.
