- Vehicle cover is usually cheaper than personal cover
- Customising your policy with options and extras can increase the initial cost, but can save you money in the long run when you need to use them
- If you live with multiple people who need breakdown cover, it’s often cheaper to get a joint policy than individual policies

How to compare breakdown cover quotes and services
Breakdown cover typically includes Roadside Assistance and recovery to a garage as standard. When it comes to comparing providers, you’ll want to think about:
How does The AA compare to competitors?
It’s tempting to choose the cheapest deal, but cheap breakdown cover providers may not have all the features and services to suit your needs. Choosing an experienced company with more accolades might be the way to go.

Types of breakdown cover
Knowing which type of breakdown cover you’ll need can help you to compare your options. There are two main types: personal breakdown cover and vehicle breakdown cover. Our personal cover is split into three different sub-types, giving you the option to choose whichever one best fits your needs. You can compare prices for each type by getting a quote.
Single personal cover
Personal breakdown cover for you as a driver or passenger in any vehicle.
Joint personal cover
Breakdown cover for you and someone you live with, as drivers or passengers in any vehicle.
Family personal cover
Breakdown cover for you and up to 3 other people you live with, as drivers or passengers in any vehicle.
Vehicle cover
Breakdown cover for one vehicle, whoever's behind the wheel.
Compare breakdown cover products to see how to extend your cover with us
Breakdown cover products might be called different things depending on the provider. Not all providers offer options or add-ons, so you should research whether you might want any of them with your breakdown cover package. We offer various products to suit your needs.
At Home
Also known as ‘Home Start’, our version is known as At Home – having it means that if your vehicle won't start or breaks down within 1/4 mile of your home, you'll get Roadside Assistance. If we can’t repair your vehicle at your address, you’ll get a recovery tow to a nearby garage.
National Recovery
Also known as ‘Relay’, but we call it National Recovery – If you break down and we can't fix your vehicle at the roadside. We'll take you, your vehicle and up to 7 passengers to any single UK destination.
Onward Travel
Options that help you complete your journey by alternative means in the event of a breakdown are commonly known as ‘Stay Mobile’, our version is called Onward Travel. If you break down and need repairs that stop your journey, we'll help with alternative transport or overnight accommodation.

Breakdown cover quote comparisons
Other breakdown cover providers may charge for their services in different ways, like with call-out fees – something that we don’t do.
However, the type of cover you choose and how you customise it can change the cost. If you’re looking for cover, bear the following in mind:
What types of breakdown cover provider are there?
When you’re choosing a breakdown cover provider, you may want to pay attention to the scale they operate on and whether they have their own fleet or not.
Some providers offer national cover, like we do, while some may be restricted to operating only in your local area. At The AA, we have our own fleet of branded breakdown recovery vehicles – some providers, however opt to use a network of patrols and garages. Other providers may also charge per every use of their service, while we prefer giving you the option of monthly or annual payments – allowing you to avoid any large or unexpected bills.
How do I compare vehicle recovery options?
With our standard level of breakdown cover, our patrols will try to fix your vehicle at the roadside. But if they can’t do that, they’ll tow you to a local garage. This is also the case with most other providers, however, they may not have a network of approved garages for repairs like we do. If you want to extend that recovery to a garage of your choice or to another UK destination, then you’ll need to add the National Recovery option to your policy.

Breakdown not routine maintenance
This policy provides emergency assistance when a vehicle suffers a sudden or unexpected mechanical or electrical fault that prevents it from being driven or continuing a journey safely.
We do not cover cosmetic, non-emergency or self-induced faults, or where we suspect third-party interference has taken place. Please do not use the policy as a replacement for routine servicing, maintenance or repairs, or to cover faults caused by the actions or omissions of the driver.
If you use this policy for a vehicle that’s not been serviced or properly maintained, we may not be able to help. We may also have to charge a service fee.
Roadworthy and road-legal vehicles only
This policy only provides assistance to roadworthy and road-legal vehicles. It does not cover unsafe, unroadworthy, unlawful or overladen vehicles, or vehicles being used improperly.
Throughout the life of the policy, ensure vehicles are:
- Serviced annually (or following manufacturers’ guidelines)
- Maintained in line with manufacturer guidelines
- In good condition and safe to drive
- Taxed, insured and have a valid MOT certificate
If you use this policy for a vehicle that’s not roadworthy or road-legal, we will not be able to help you get back on the road.
Repeat call-outs and pre-existing conditions are not covered
We cannot provide assistance if you call us out for a fault we’ve already attended within the last 28 days – unless you can provide proof that a permanent repair has been completed by a garage.
If we’ve made a temporary repair to your vehicle, please arrange for a permanent repair to be made soon after.
We do not provide cover for any known faults that existed before you bought breakdown cover, so please don’t try to claim for them. If you use this policy for a vehicle with a known fault or a temporary repair that hasn’t been made permanent, we may not be able to help. We may also have to charge a service fee.
Covered vehicles and drivers
The policy covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) in weight and 8 foot 3 inches (2.55 metres) wide.
Please do not use breakdown cover for vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes or wider than 2.55 metres.
Vehicles that have been vandalised or subject to malicious damage are classed are insured events. This means they’re usually covered by motor insurance, so we cannot provide assistance in these circumstances.
If you have a vehicle-based policy, the vehicle you registered with The AA is covered for all drivers.
If you change your vehicle, please ensure that you update us as soon as you can.
If you have a personal-based policy (single, joint, family), a vehicle is covered only if the member is a driver or passenger in the vehicle when it breaks down. We cannot provide assistance if drivers or passengers are being abusive or uncooperative.
Commercial vehicles
You’ll need to add Commercial Use if you want to cover any vehicle used for:
- Carrying items/people for money
- Delivery or collection of goods
- Transporting passengers
- Carrying equipment, tools or materials
- A combination of private/domestic and commercial purposes
If you call us out for a commercial vehicle and only have standard breakdown cover, we may not be able to help or may have to charge a service fee.
If you want to cover a fleet (more than 3 vehicles) you’ll need our business breakdown cover.
