Cheap breakdown cover

The average cost of breakdown cover can vary widely, falling anywhere between £30 and £100 due to the different levels of service offered by different providers. If you’re researching the cheapest price and comparing your options, be careful when picking the cheapest provider, as they may have limited services or hidden costs (for example, limits on call-outs or only providing assistance for vehicles of a certain age).

To get cheap European breakdown cover with us, you should first assess your needs. If you’re only visiting another European country as a one-off, then our single trip cover might be the best option for value. If you’re planning on making multiple trips, then our annual multi-trip cover works out cheaper than buying multiple single trip cover policies.

Every AA member gets 10% off European breakdown cover, this includes members who have a standard Roadside Assistance policy with us in the UK.

If you’re already a Silver or Gold AA member in the UK, you can enjoy either 1 or 2 free days of European breakdown cover or up to 10% off our Annual European breakdown cover. To use this benefit, simply call us on 0800 072 3279 before you travel.

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’ve got vehicle cover, change your vehicle details as soon as you can.

With single, joint or family personal cover, you'll only need to change your vehicle details if you have Commercial Use or Parts and Garage Cover added to your policy.

We'll help with breakdowns that happen from 24 hours after you’ve updated us.

If you have Tyre Cover, you’ll only be able to claim for tyre repairs or replacements after the first 7 days. 

If you have Parts and Garage Cover, you’ll only be able to claim for new faults that occur after the first 14 days.
