How many tyre repairs or replacements can I claim each year with Tyre Cover?

You get up to 5 tyres repaired or replaced in a policy year with Tyre Cover.

This limit applies to the number of tyres you have repaired or replaced, rather than the number of claims you submit. For example, you could have 4 tyres replaced on a single claim. Then you’d have 1 tyre repair or replacement left for that policy year.

Which vehicles are covered by Tyre Cover (cars, motorbikes, motorhomes, EVs, hybrids)?

We’ll cover the tyres on any nominated vehicle – as long as it’s included on your breakdown cover policy.

That includes:

  • Cars
  • Classic cars
  • Electric vehicles
  • Hybrids
  • Motorbikes
  • Motorhomes
  • Vans
  • Commercial vehicles – as long as you also have that vehicle on your Commercial Use policy

To be eligible for breakdown cover your vehicle must:

  • Be roadworthy and taxed
  • Have an up-to-date MOT
  • Weigh a maximum of 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kg)
  • Have a maximum width of 8 foot 3 inches (2.55 metres), excluding mirrors

Is tyre insurance (Tyre Cover) worth it?

Tyre insurance can be worth it if you want peace of mind against unexpected tyre repair or replacement bills.

Many newer vehicles – especially EVs and hybrids – don’t come with a spare tyre. And their tyres can be costly to replace, as can those for motorbikes and motorhomes.

With AA Tyre Cover, you’re protected for up to 5 tyre repairs or replacements a year, worth up to £160 per tyre. This could save you money if you need to have tyres repaired or replaced.

Does Tyre Cover include normal tyre wear and tear?

No, Tyre Cover does not include wear and tear.

It also does not include tyres below the legal tread depth.

Does Tyre Cover protect against malicious damage?

Yes, Tyre Cover includes malicious damage caused by a third party, such as slashed tyres.

Report any malicious damage to your tyres to the police within 72 hours.

You’ll need to include a crime reference number when you submit your Tyre Cover claim.

Can I upgrade to premium tyres with Tyre Cover?

Yes, you can choose to upgrade to higher-specification tyres if you need a replacement after a breakdown. But we’ll only reimburse you for the retail value of the original tyres up to £160 per tyre – you’ll have to cover the difference in the costs yourself.

Can I choose where my tyres are repaired or replaced with Tyre Cover?

To make a valid Tyre Cover claim, your tyres must be repaired or replaced at a reputable garage – that means it’s VAT registered or approved by an accredited automotive organisation.

If the patrol can fit a spare or temporarily fix your tyre, you can drive to a garage of your choice.

If your vehicle needs to be towed, we’ll take you to a nearby garage.

If you have National Recovery on your policy, we’ll tow you and your vehicle to any garage – or other single destination – you choose in the UK.

How do I make a Tyre Cover claim for tyre repair or replacement?

If your tyres are damaged and you need to make a Tyre Cover claim, here’s what to do:

  1. Report a breakdown – We’ll send a patrol to help you at the roadside.
  2. Temporary fix or recovery – The patrol will try to get you moving again. If not, we’ll recover you to a garage.
  3. Get your tyres repaired or replaced at a garage – You’ll need to pay the garage.
  4. Submit your claim – Complete our online claims form within 30 days, attaching your invoice, photos and crime reference number if your claim is for malicious damage. We’ll reimburse up to £160 per tyre after your claim is approved.

What do I do if my car breaks down?

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It’s the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.
