What is multi-car breakdown cover?

Multi-car breakdown cover, also known as personal breakdown cover, is a policy that covers you as a driver or passenger in an unlimited number of eligible vehicles, all under one AA membership.

It’s ideal for households with two or more cars, so any covered person can get roadside help when they break down. You’re also covered in cars that aren’t registered to your address, so it’s a great option if you regularly travel with friends or extended family members.

Here are some features of multi-car breakdown cover:

  • Cover multiple vehicles under one convenient policy to reduce paperwork
  • Add more people to your policy with joint or family cover – this can be cheaper than buying multiple individual policies
  • Assistance if a vehicle breaks down 1/4 mile or more away from home
  • Get Roadside Assistance and recovery to the nearest garage if we can’t repair your vehicle on the spot
  • Unlike some breakdown providers, we don’t limit the number of vehicles you’re covered in

How does multi-car breakdown cover work?

Breakdowns can happen anywhere, whether you're running errands or on a road trip. Multi-car breakdown cover protects you as a driver or passenger in any car, motorbike or van used for private and domestic purposes. You can however be covered for commercial purposes if you buy Commercial Use with your standard breakdown cover.

Get assistance when you need it

Breaking down can be a stressful experience, but with Roadside Assistance from The AA, you're protected 24/7.

Contact The AA

Use The AA App or give us a call to report your breakdown and get assistance. With the app, you'll get real-time updates, and you can track the arrival of the breakdown service.

An experienced patrol will try to fix the problem at the roadside

If anyone on your policy breaks down over 1/4 mile from home, our patrol will attempt to fix the vehicle at the roadside.

If we can’t get you going, we’ll tow you to a local garage

If we can’t fix the problem, we’ll take your vehicle to a local garage for further assistance.

What types of multi-car breakdown cover are there?

There are three types of multi-car or personal breakdown cover, which allow you to create the breakdown policy for your needs and vehicles you own – including cars, vans, motorbikes and electric vehicles (EVs). You can cover just yourself, opt for joint coverage, or include up to 3 other people you live with.

Things to consider when choosing multi-car breakdown cover

When comparing multi-car breakdown cover options, it’s important to look at more than just the price. Here are a few other things to think about…

  • The level of cover you need – think about where you drive most often. Roadside assistance may be enough if you mainly make local journeys, while national recovery or onward travel can provide extra reassurance for longer trips or regular commuting.
  • Response times and roadside repairs – when comparing providers, look at factors such as how quickly they aim to reach you and how often they repair vehicles at the roadside.
  • Policy exclusions and vehicle limits – check for any restrictions, such as exclusions for recurring faults or limits on the age, size or weight of vehicles that can be covered.
  • Individual or family cover – if other people in your household would also benefit from personal breakdown cover, it may be more cost-effective to choose a family policy that covers multiple people under one membership.

Choosing the right personal breakdown cover means finding a policy that matches how you travel, giving you the confidence that help is available whenever you need it.

How can I customise my AA breakdown cover policy?

You’ll get Roadside Assistance as standard. Once you’ve selected personal breakdown cover (multi-car breakdown cover), you can customise your policy to suit your needs – giving you more choices if a breakdown happens. Whether it’s a quick fix at the roadside or recovery to a garage, we’ve got you covered.

At Home

If your vehicle won't start or breaks down within 1/4 mile of your home, you'll get a recovery tow to a nearby garage.

National Recovery

If you break down and we can't fix your vehicle at the roadside, we'll take you, your vehicle and up to 7 passengers to any single UK destination, subject to policy terms and vehicle eligibility. This is handy to have if you travel far away from home.

Onward Travel

If you break down and need repairs that stop your journey, we’ll help with alternative transport or overnight accommodation.

Parts and Garage Cover

If you call us out for a breakdown and need garage repairs, we’ll help cover eligible garage repair costs up to £535 per claim, with a £35 excess and annual claim limits, subject to the separate Parts and Garage Cover terms.

Tyre Cover

If your tyres need to be repaired or replaced after a breakdown, we'll help cover eligible repair or replacement costs up to £160 per tyre, subject to the separate Tyre Cover terms.

Commercial Use

If you have an eligible vehicle being used to carry equipment, people or goods in return for payment, you can add Commercial Use. Fleets of 3 or more vehicles need business breakdown cover.

Key Cover

If your car keys or house keys are lost, stolen or broken, or you're locked out, we'll arrange a replacement key or locksmith, subject to the separate Key Cover terms.

Yes, multi-car breakdown cover from The AA is the same as personal breakdown cover. You’re covered as an individual in any eligible vehicle, whether you’re driving or travelling as a passenger. You can choose from single cover, joint cover and family cover.

If you’d like to be covered in multiple vehicles, then our policies offering personal cover might suit you. We don’t call it multi-car cover, but you’ll be covered as a driver or passenger in any vehicle.

If you only want cover for yourself in multiple vehicles, then you can choose cover for you. If you’d like to cover more than 1 person in multiple vehicles, then you might want to choose family breakdown cover.

With family cover, you can add up to 3 other people to your personal cover, as long as everyone lives at the same address. That could include your:

  • Partner
  • Family members
  • Housemates
  • Children – even if they’re students temporarily living away from home

Looking for the right cover for you? Read our tips for how to compare breakdown cover.

Our single policy covers one individual, our joint policy covers two people living at the same address, and our family policy covers up to 4 people living at the same address (this can include students who live elsewhere during term time or members of the armed forces who are temporarily living away but still registered at the home address).

No. With multi-car breakdown cover, you’re covered as a driver or passenger in any eligible vehicle, no matter what address it’s registered to.

With our multi-car breakdown cover, you can make unlimited call-outs, as long as the problem isn’t caused by a recurring fault that hasn’t been fixed. This ensures you’ll get help whenever you need it, whether you’re driving your own car, van, motorhome or someone else’s vehicle.

Our policies only cover you if you break down in the UK. If you’d like to be covered abroad, you’ll need to get European breakdown cover.

If you have personal, joint or family cover along with Parts and Garage Cover, you can add up to 4 cars onto 1 policy.

Just let us know which vehicles you want to include.

If you’re on a single-vehicle policy and want to add another car, you can switch to a multi-car breakdown cover, also called personal breakdown cover. This policy gives you flexible cover in any eligible vehicle, whether you’re the driver or a passenger.

Yes, you can add your partner to your AA membership providing that you both live at the same address. To upgrade, just log in into your account or call us and we’ll help.

If you choose family breakdown cover, you and up to 3 other people you live with are covered under one policy – no matter what car they’re driving or riding as a passenger in. This includes students who live away from home during term time.

Yes, with multi-car breakdown cover you’re covered when driving or travelling as a passenger in any eligible vehicle – this includes vans, motorbikes, motorhomes, minibuses and caravans and trailers on tow at the time of breakdown.

Your vehicle must have a gross vehicle weight of less than 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) and it can't be wider than wider than 8 feet 3 inches (2.55m), excluding mirrors. The same maximum weight and width separately apply to any caravans or trailers you’re towing. Your vehicle must also be roadworthy, taxed and have an up-to-date MOT.

If you have multi-car breakdown cover, you’re covered in any eligible vehicle – this includes if you break down as a driver or passenger in someone else’s car.

Depending on your driving habits and the number of vehicles you regularly drive or travel in, multi-car cover can be cheaper than having separate policies.

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.

It's simple to change your vehicle details online, and we’ll check that your new vehicle is eligible (terms and conditions apply).
