Car insurance tips for women

Women drivers can pay less

Car insurers can't use gender to calculate a car insurance premium.

So like all drivers, women are assessed on their driving history, the car being insured and details about themselves. But there are still steps you can take to keep the premium as low as possible.

Tips for women

What do insurers consider when you get a quote?

The main factors they take into consideration are:

  • Your age.
  • The car you're driving or will be driving.
  • Your annual mileage.
  • Where you live.
  • Any security devices and modifications on your car.
  • Any claims, incidents and motoring convictions you may have.

How can you keep the premium down?

Well, age is risk factor for all drivers. While premiums tend to rise when you pass 70, younger or new drivers are more likely to have an accident. If you're in a high-risk age category your quote will be higher.

Nonetheless, there are some options to keep down the cost if you're a young driver. But driving safely, at any age, is always the best way to keep your car insurance premium low. And careful driving without accidents will build up your no claims discount. After just one year you could save up to a third.

Premiums also depend on where you live. Parking off the road and additional car security could bring cheaper insurance, or else where you park the car outside the home.

Another way to keep the cost of your insurance down is to select a voluntary higher excess. The excess is how much you pay towards a claim.

But apart from driving the price down, do look carefully at the policy details to ensure they meet your requirements. For example, check that the policy fully covers your belongings inside the car, or replacement child seats if you have a family.
