Cornwall has emerged as the number one summer holiday destination this summer, according to a new survey conducted by the AA*. The poll, which gathered responses from over 12,000 drivers, reveals that despite many motorists planning to drive less this year, Cornwall remains the most popular choice for those embarking on longer journeys.
Despite a shift in travel habits, with fewer drivers opting for extended road trips, the allure of the Cornish coast continues to captivate holidaymakers. Its rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and charming seaside towns make it a perennial favourite, followed closely by the scenic landscapes of Scotland and the rolling countryside of Devon.
The most popular UK holiday destinations are:
- Cornwall
- Scotland
- Devon
- Wales
- Norfolk
- Lake District
- Dorset
- Yorkshire
- London
- Kent
Shorter trips
Many people indicated that they prefer shorter getaways, the Jurassic Coast remains a standout. An AA/Yonder survey** found that nearly a quarter of drivers (23%) have explored the iconic stretch between Swanage and Lyme Regis which is home to the UK’s only natural World Heritage Site. With its fossil-rich cliffs and dramatic coastal scenery, it’s a perfect choice for a weekend escape.
European Escapes Still in Demand
For drivers venturing beyond the UK, France and Spain continue to be the top international destinations. With many planning to drive across the Channel, AA European Breakdown Cover offers essential protection and peace of mind, ensuring drivers are supported throughout their journey abroad.
Changing Travel Patterns
The survey also reveals that just over 10% of drivers expect to travel more than 200 miles in any given week this summer. This suggests a growing trend toward shorter, more localised holidays, possibly influenced by rising fuel costs and changing lifestyle preferences.
Fuel Costs: A Tale of Two Routes
As part of its summer travel insights, the AA Route Planner has analysed fuel prices*** along major routes to these popular destinations. The findings show a significant price difference between motorway service stations and alternative A-road routes. On average, fuel at motorway services is 16p per litre more expensive.
For example, drivers travelling from London to the West Country via the M4/M5 corridor paid an average of 155.2p per litre for petrol and 163.2p for diesel. In contrast, those taking the A30 or A303 routes found petrol at 139.2p and diesel at 147.3p per litre. This highlights the potential savings for those willing to take the scenic route.
Tyres, Treads, and Top-Ups
Prior to travelling, The AA recommends you should perform a vehicle check. Make sure your tyres are correctly inflated for the load you’re carrying. Check all your fluids – oil, coolant and screen-wash, and test your lights and windscreen wipers. Make sure you have enough fuel or EV charge to account for unexpected delays or diversions.
Edmund King, AA President, said: “It’s no surprise that Cornwall continues to capture the hearts of British holidaymakers. With its stunning coastline, charming villages and family-friendly attractions, it’s the perfect destination for a summer road trip.
“Our analysis shows that fuel prices can vary significantly depending on where you fill up, with motorway service stations charging, on average, 16 pence more per litre than nearby A-road alternatives. That difference can add up quickly, especially for families travelling long distances. By using tools like the AA Route Planner and checking fuel prices in advance, drivers can make smarter choices that help stretch their holiday budgets further.
“As the summer unfolds, the AA continues to support drivers with expert route planning, travel advice, and breakdown cover - whether they’re heading to the Cornish coast or cruising through the Pyrenees.”
