AA Warns Drivers as Storm Bram Brings Severe Weather

AA Warns Drivers as Storm Bram Brings Severe Weather - Amber Alert for Scotland, Wales and the South West

08 December 2025

The AA is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads as Storm Bram is set to bring strong winds and very heavy rain to northern and western parts of the UK.

The amber warning for wind, valid from 4pm on Tuesday until midnight, covers northwest Scotland, where gusts could reach up to 90mph.

An amber warning for rain is in force for South West England (Devon and Cornwall) on Tuesday morning, with rainfall totals of up to 120mm on high ground and widespread flooding risks.

Further yellow warnings for wind are in place for Wales and southwest England as well as Northern Ireland and northern England into southern and eastern Scotland.

Yellow warnings for rain have also been issued for most of Wales, the Southwest and the central belt of Scotland.

Areas affected:

Amber Rain Warning (Tuesday 0000-1000)

  • Devon
  • Cornwall
  • Wales

Amber Wind Warning (Tuesday evening 1600-0000):

  • Northwest Scotland: Highlands & Eilean Siar, Western Isles, coastal and high ground areas

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and avoid unnecessary journeys, particularly in areas under amber warnings. Conditions will be hazardous, with surface water flooding, poor visibility, and the potential for bridge closures and blocked routes.

High-sided vehicles are especially vulnerable on exposed roads, and motorists should expect delays and diversions on major routes. The AA recommends checking local traffic updates and weather forecasts before setting off.

Shaun Jones, AA Expert Patrol, said: "Storm Bram will make driving extremely challenging in parts of the UK. If your journey isn’t essential, delay it until conditions improve. If you must travel, slow down, increase your stopping distance, and watch out for hazards like fallen branches and standing water.

“Even shallow floodwater can stall your engine or sweep your car away, so never take risks. Make sure your tyres, lights, and wipers are in good condition and your phone is fully charged before setting off. It’s also a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your car – including warm clothing and a torch.”

“Preparation and caution can make all the difference when the weather turns severe."
