Using your car during the coronavirus disruption

The government has advised all of us to reduce social interaction in order to slow the transmission of coronavirus.

Yet even while your car is parked at home, it's important to keep it insured. Your car insurance will continue to protect you against accidents, theft and vandalism, and the loss of personal belongings in the vehicle.

Remember, if you want to take your vehicle off the road for some time without insurance, you must have a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).

Meanwhile, your insurance will allow you to make those essential journeys, such as looking after friends and relatives, or buying food.


An update about coronavirus (COVID-19)

Due to the situation, we have fewer staff available to answer your calls. We’ve changed our customer service hours to 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday so we can make sure we're there for you when you need us.

You might have a longer wait on the phone, but we’re working hard to keep service levels as high as possible while looking after our people.

Please have your policy number handy when calling. Your policy number is on your Statement of Insurance.

When you call AA Claimline, your personal claim advisor will explain all the available options, and assist you through every step of the claims process. Then, once the incident report has been completed, you will be passed to either your insurer or ClaimFast (our preferred accident management company) to progress your claim.

Your AA personal claim advisor will contact you in a week to discuss how your claim is progressing, and see if we can be of any assistance.

About my no claim discount

 

Where can I find proof of my no claim discount?

New customers
When you get a car insurance quote, we ask how many years no claim discount (or no claims bonus) you already have. This information can be found on the cancellation notice or last renewal invitation from your previous insurer.

In order to validate your policy after purchase, we may ask for proof of the discount you've earned.

You can send us a copy of the renewal or cancellation notice, or a letter on headed paper from your previous insurer.

The document must be dated within the past 2 years, and isn't used for another vehicle. Also, please tell us about any gap of more than 30 days between your previous and the new AA policy, including claims or convictions.

The document should show:

  • Your name and address
  • The previous insurance policy number and expiry date
  • The vehicle registration number
  • Number of years no claim discount

On receipt we'll acknowledge the proof of your no claim discount. If we do need further information, we'll allow you sufficient time to provide it. Meanwhile, your AA car insurance policy remains active.

Existing customers
If you already have car insurance with us, the number of years no claim discount is on your certificate of insurance. You'll have received a copy at purchase or renewal, either by post or in your online account.
