Storm claims update: Eunice wasn’t nice and Franklin wasn’t much better

AA Home Insurance receives almost a month’s worth of claims over the weekend

22 February 2022

AA Insurance Services have been working hard across the weekend as customers start making raising claims following Storm Eunice.

Over the weekend AA Home Insurance* received more than 600 claims solely in relation to Storm Eunice, almost as much as many claims it would expect to see in a whole month. Around 90% of claims were for damaged roofs and fences, but also included major claims were fallen trees damaged homes.

The AA’s Motor Insurance** team also received around 350 claims over the weekend with many being single vehicle collisions. As expected with storms, AA Insurance Services saw a significant increase in calls to its offices.

Many homes across the country have seen hundreds of pounds worth of damage due to high winds and some have much bigger claims because of fallen trees and flooding

With Storm Franklin ending yesterday, AA Insurance is now receiving claims in relation to flooding as well as other wind related damage. As the UK Storm season continues and more customers make claims over the coming days, the AA is anticipating between 2,000 to 3,000 storm claims.

The AA also saw a spike in Home Insurance sales last Thursday, as homeowners braced themselves at the last moment for the incoming winds.

Gus Park, managing director of AA Insurance Services, said: “Many homes across the country have seen hundreds of pounds worth of damage due to high winds and some have much bigger claims because of fallen trees and flooding.

“While we can never be sure when the next storm will hit, we hope this acts as a reminder for people to check their properties and get any repairs made***.

“With calls coming in thick and fast we are helping our customers as best we can by opening our lines longer as well as offering customers the opportunity to log their claim online where we will call them back. Those using this service over the weekend were contacted 24 hours as we know giving peace of mind is key.

“We also urge homeowners not to leave insurance to the last minute. While the Met Office is good at providing notice of storms****, other unforeseen events can happen which will be easier to resolve with a policy already in place.”
