If you want to become a driving instructor in the UK, the ADI Part 1 theory test (often called the ADI theory test) is the first test you’ll take once you’ve applied and started your training. It checks that you have the knowledge needed to teach learners safely and professionally.

The ADI qualification process explained
To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), you’ll need to pass three tests set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Each stage builds on the previous one, taking you from theory knowledge to practical driving ability and finally your teaching skills.
The three tests are:
- ADI Part 1 – theory test (the focus of this guide)
- ADI Part 2 – driving ability test
- ADI Part 3 – instructional ability test
After passing ADI Part 1, the next step is the ADI Part 2 driving ability test, which assesses your driving standard.
Once you pass Part 2, you’ll have one final stage to complete – the ADI Part 3 instructional ability test, where you demonstrate your ability to teach learner drivers safely and effectively.

The ADI Part 1 theory test is the first exam you’ll take as an ADI. It assesses your understanding of road rules, driver training techniques and hazard awareness.

What is the ADI Part 1 theory test?
The ADI Part 1 theory test assesses the knowledge required to teach safe driving. It’s similar in structure to the learner driver theory test, but it goes deeper into areas that matter more for driving instructors. The test content is based on the Highway Code and official DVSA learning materials, including Safe Driving for Life.
The test has two parts:
- A multiple-choice theory section
- A hazard perception section
You must pass both parts in the same sitting to pass the test.
ADI Part 1 test format explained
The exam is taken on a computer at a DVSA theory test centre. Both sections focus on knowledge that future driving instructors need, including the Highway Code, teaching techniques and driver behaviour.
Multiple-choice section
The multiple-choice part includes 100 questions, covering topics such as:
- The Highway Code
- Road safety and traffic signs
- Teaching techniques for learner drivers
- Driving instructor responsibilities
- Vehicle handling and road procedures
You’ll have 90 minutes to complete this section.
Hazard perception section
The hazard perception test measures how quickly you recognise developing hazards on the road.
You’ll watch 14 video clips, each showing real driving scenarios. In 13 of the clips, there’s one developing hazard, and one clip contains two hazards.
You score points depending on how quickly you identify each hazard.
What is the pass mark for ADI Part 1?
To pass the ADI Part 1 theory test, you need to meet the required score in both sections.
Pass marks are:
- Multiple-choice section: 85 out of 100, including at least 20 out of 25 in each of the four subject areas
- Hazard perception section: 57 out of 75
If you pass only one section, you’ll still need to retake the entire test next time.
How to book your ADI Part 1 theory test
You can book the ADI Part 1 theory test through the DVSA. Before booking, make sure you’ve already started your ADI application and received confirmation that you’re eligible.
Where to book the test
The test is booked online through the DVSA theory test booking service. You’ll choose a test centre and available time slot that suits you.
What to bring on the day
When you arrive at the test centre, you’ll need to bring:
- Your valid UK driving licence
- Your booking confirmation details
