Scotland Shines as a Top Summer Destination

Scotland Shines as a Top Summer Destination

  • Scotland ranks second in UK summer getaways, just behind Cornwall
  • Iconic road trips like the North Coast 500 and Argyll Coastal Route draw drivers north
  • “Scotland offers breathtaking escapes without breaking the bank” – AA President

08 August 2025

Scotland has secured its place as one of the UK’s top summer holiday destinations, according to a new AA survey*. With over 12,000 drivers polled, the findings reveal that despite a trend toward shorter journeys, Scotland’s dramatic landscapes and rich cultural heritage continue to draw holidaymakers from across the UK.

From the rugged Highlands to the serene lochs and vibrant cities, Scotland offers a diverse range of experiences for travellers seeking both adventure and relaxation. Its position just behind Cornwall in the rankings highlights its enduring appeal, especially as rising fuel prices prompt many to reconsider long-distance travel.

  2. Scotland
  3. Devon
  4. Wales

Scotland’s Iconic Road Trips

Scotland’s scenic routes are a major draw for motorists. The legendary North Coast 500, often dubbed Scotland’s answer to Route 66, offers 500 miles of breathtaking coastal views, castles, and Highland hospitality.

Meanwhile, the Argyll Coastal Route winds through lochs and forests from Tarbet to Fort William, perfect for a relaxed, nature-filled escape.

Other favourites include the Borders Historic Route, which connects Edinburgh to Carlisle through rolling hills and historic towns, and the Fife Coastal Route, offering charming fishing villages and panoramic sea views.

Shorter Trips, Big Impact

While many drivers are opting for shorter getaways, Scotland’s accessibility from major UK cities makes it an ideal choice. Whether it’s a weekend in the Cairngorms or a coastal drive along the Moray Firth, Scottish road trips offer unforgettable scenery without the need for extensive travel.

European Escapes Still Popular

For those venturing abroad, France and Spain remain top choices. The AA’s European Breakdown Cover ensures peace of mind for drivers heading across the Channel.

Fuel Costs and Smarter Routes

The AA Route Planner has revealed stark differences in fuel prices along major routes. Motorway service stations charge, on average, 16p more per litre than nearby A-road alternatives. For example, drivers heading north via the M6 may find better fuel deals by diverting through scenic A-roads in the Borders or Dumfries & Galloway.

Tyres, Treads, and Top-Ups

Prior to travelling, The AA recommends you should perform a vehicle check. Check tyre pressure and condition, fluid levels, lights, and fuel or EV charge. These simple steps can prevent breakdowns and ensure a smoother journey.

Scotland

Edmund King, AA President, said: “Scotland offers breathtaking escapes without breaking the bank. It continues to be a top choice for UK holidaymakers, offering stunning scenery, rich history, and unforgettable road trips.

“Our analysis shows that fuel prices can vary significantly depending on where you fill up, with motorway service stations charging, on average, 16 pence more per litre than nearby A-road alternatives. That difference can add up quickly, especially for families travelling long distances. By using tools like the AA Route Planner and checking fuel prices in advance, drivers can make smarter choices that help stretch their holiday budgets further.

“Whether you’re exploring the Highlands or heading to the Hebrides, The AA is here to support drivers with expert advice and reliable breakdown cover.”
