How to get help in a breakdown

Get back on the road, fast

The fastest and easiest way to get your vehicle going again is to report your breakdown online through the AA website or app. It gives us everything we need to send a patrol out to you and get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

Here's how to do it...

  • Tap or click the 'Get help' button on the AA website or app
  • Share your location so we can find you even if you don't know where you are
  • Tell us about the problem you're having with your vehicle
  • Enter your contact details and AA membership details
  • That's it. A patrol will be alerted and be with you as soon as they can

It's best to call us if you're stuck in a dangerous location or have been involved in an accident so we can prioritise your safety.

Safety first

Breaking down by the side of the road can be a scary experience. Follow this general advice to make sure you're as safe and sound as possible while waiting for our patrol to arrive:

  • If your vehicle's in a dangerous location and still drivable, move it somewhere safe now
  • Keep your side lights and hazard lights on
  • It may be unsafe to stay in your vehicle, so exit carefully using the doors opposite to traffic if possible and wait away from the road, preferably behind a barrier
  • If you can't leave the vehicle, wear your seatbelt
  • Stay in your safe place until our patrol says otherwise
I don't have breakdown cover - can I still get help today?
Yes you can. If you aren't already covered by someone like the AA, RAC or Green Flag, we'll provide instant cover for anyone broken down in the UK. Call us on 0800 88 77 66 to get help today.
What should I do if I've been involved in an accident?
If you're a Member with us, we can help you at the scene of a road traffic accident.

Once we've had the all-clear from any emergency services, we'll do our best to fix your vehicle so it's safe to drive away from the scene. If it can't be fixed, we'll arrange for one of our recovery vans to take it to a nearby garage.

Is there a call out charge?
If you're not already covered by us, you’ll be charged an emergency call out fee on top of the regular joining fee for new Members.
Can you help if I've lost my keys?
Yes we can. Our Key Assist service can replace keys that are broken, faulty, lost or stolen. We're fully mobile, so can come to you wherever you are – at work, at home, even in a car park. Just give us a call on 0808 231 2374. We're here 7 days a week, 7am–10.45pm.
How does reporting my breakdown online work?
Rather than calling us and potentially having to wait for an adviser to come free, you can report your breakdown instantly using our app or website. In just a few clicks it tells us where you are and what the problem is, and we'll send out a mechanic just as normal. We'll also send you live text updates and a link to a special map so you can follow our progress and track our mechanic to your side.
