Volunteers, who support a vital community transport scheme for adults in Kent, have received free vehicle checks and services to ensure their work continues in the safest way possible.

The local AA Mobile Mechanics team recently partnered with Dial 2 Drive, which supports adults who are unable to access public transport due to age, illness, or disability.

Operating across Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, and surrounding areas of West Kent, Dial 2 Drive is run by local charity Imago Community and relies on the generosity and commitment of its volunteers – who all use their own vehicles to help others stay connected.

Recognising the importance of vehicle safety and reliability for these volunteers, the AA team offered free vehicle servicing and inspections to three outstanding individuals who exemplify the spirit of giving back.

Among the recipients was Joe Mendell, a retired computer technician from Louisiana now living in Tunbridge Wells. Joe has volunteered with Dial 2 Drive for four years and says the role keeps him engaged with his community and allows him to “pay it forward.”

Also honoured was Martin Milmo, a retired foreign language teacher from Tonbridge. Martin finds deep fulfilment in his role, especially in seeing his regular passengers grow in confidence. He praised the Dial 2 Drive organisers for their “can-do” attitude, which he says inspires the entire volunteer team.

Phil Clark, a retired businessman from Brenchley, was the third recipient. Phil found the transition into retirement challenging until he joined Dial 2 Drive. Volunteering has helped him maintain structure in his week and reconnect with his rural community, all while supporting others with their mobility needs.

The AA Mobile Mechanics team, equipped with the latest diagnostic tools and expert knowledge, carried out the services at locations convenient to each volunteer. This flexible, mobile approach is especially valuable for those with busy schedules, limited mobility, or who live in more remote areas.

Louise Griffiths, Director of Development at Imago Community, said “Our volunteer drivers are at the heart of the Dial 2 Drive community transport service, dedicating their time and vehicles to help people who might otherwise struggle to get out to medical or social appointments. Having the AA service their cars at home is a huge benefit, giving reassurance that their vehicles are safe and reliable, and allowing them to continue supporting vulnerable people in our community with confidence and peace of mind.”

James Hosking, Managing Director of AA Mobile Mechanics, said “We’re delighted to support these volunteers who give so much of themselves to help others. Our expert Mobile Mechanics ensure drivers’ vehicles are in top condition, in a super-convenient way that fits around their work, family and volunteering commitments and we’re glad to support Dial 2 Drive.”

Paul Oliver-Smith is a retired Councillor who regularly relies on the support of Dial 2 Drive to get himself and his wife, Sylvia, to important medical appointments. He said: “Dial 2 Drive is a vital and very noble service that allows me and Sylvia to attend our crucial medical appointments.

“Our regular driver, Phil, is the most wonderful man and gives us all the time we need when he escorts us to wherever we need to be. He, and the other Dial 2 Drive volunteers provide a vital lifeline to so many people, who without them, are likely to lead a very solitary and confined lifestyle. I would encourage anyone who is looking for ways to fill their spare time to get in touch with the wonderful team at Dial 2 Drive.

“I applaud The AA for their recognition of the volunteers and their commitment to ensuring the vehicles we travel in are in tip top condition, over and above the regular checks carried out by the volunteer team.”

This initiative not only highlights the professionalism and convenience of AA Mobile Mechanics but also shines a light on the everyday heroes who make a difference in their communities – quietly, humbly, and with great heart.
