In 1805 the former Red Lion took the Methuen family's name when it was rebuilt in Bath stone with three storeys and a fine portico. Inside are elm floorboards, rugs, log fires and neutral walls hung with local prints and etchings. The food boasts British roots with strong Italian influences. Try pork and pigeon terrine with fig and port purée and pecan and shallot salad. Then head for pan-fried cod, braised gem lettuce, samphire, potato and tarragon gnocchi and shellfish sauce. An Italian influence might reappear at dessert with affogato, or stay English with baked vanilla and custard cheesecake, poached rhubarb and rhubarb sorbet.
