Classy modern pub food in a stylishly reinvented country inn

What was a traditional country pub in a village not far from the racing at Newmarket has been glossily boutiqued into a stylish eight-bedroom inn, although the bar at its heart still manages to do sterling service as Moulton's watering-hole. It all looks a sight for sore eyes, particularly when lit up at night. In the kitchen, meanwhile, they're avid for Suffolk produce from land and sea, which gets turned into elegant, vividly colourful dishes that exert a strong appeal to modern tastes. The brasserie-format menu has many populist touches, from the pork scratchings or croque monsieur appetisers to the platter of 'retro desserts' made for sharing. Elsewhere, today's earthy, gutsy preferences are celebrated in a salad of truffled goats' cheese, beetroot, pear and hazelnuts, and mains such as stone bass with razor clams, chicory and carrots, or local venison loin with blackberries and boulangère potatoes, are equally well-considered. A separate section of house favourites naturally takes in salmon fishcakes, rib-eye steaks and burgers, but also chicken breast with pancetta, white beans and mushrooms. If the retro desserts aren't your bag, look to dark chocolate torte with clementine sorbet, or start on the mini-nibbles - variously flavoured fruit pastilles or custard doughnuts.
