The Moat House is indeed moated, a part-timbered manor dating from the 14th century. Its seasonally changing carte might open with lobster and crab ravioli with chervil tuber purée, fennel choucroute and sauce armoricaine, or more straightforward asparagus velouté with duck yolk and mushroom brioche soldiers. Main courses can be complex too but equally satisfying: attractively presented pork tenderloin with peanut-crusted belly, an oriental-style sauce, king prawn, carrot and star anise purée and pak choi, or lemon sole not just given the meunière treatment but served with scallops, parsley root and chard. End with an inventive pudding such as Turkish delight cheesecake with rose water gel and chocolate sorbet.
