Dating back to 1905, this splendid white-painted house enjoys a stunning setting, overlooking the Ayrshire coast and the fairways of Royal Troon. With beautiful gardens and 30 acres of woodland, it’s a gloriously quiet and comfortable place to escape the rat race. Service is very efficient and friendly in the formal Kintyre Restaurant, a high-ceilinged, airy room, with elegant table settings and crystal chandeliers. The modern cooking has a firm basis in classic French technique, and presentation is very stylish. You might begin with Ayrshire pork with Troon langoustines, pear, vanilla and celeriac, or a perfectly constructed lobster bisque, accompanied by native crab croûton, saffron aïoli and parmesan. At main, pancetta-wrapped monkfish comes with salsify, poached grapes and red wine fish sauce, another very precise and stylish dish; or you might plump for rack of Scottish lamb with roasted artichoke, Provençal vegetables, basil and red pepper sauce. Finish with a classic custard tart, with clean, simple lines and a rich and tasty custard, accompanied by delicious liquorice and fig compôte and clotted cream.
