An idyllic honey-hued stone inn on the green of a pretty Cotswolds village, the Plough presents a quintessentially English picture. Inside, the place has the sort of stylish rustic-chic decor – all venerable beams and exposed stone walls – that you’d hope for in a foodie pub, but kids and Fido are welcome so there’s no standing on ceremony. Chef-proprietor Emily Watkins learned to revere fine ingredients during her stint in Heston's team at The Fat Duck, but there's no molecular wizardry going on in this kitchen, instead she offers a modernised take on country food. The bar menu takes in the likes of crispy pork ears or rabbit parfait with red onion marmalade, while the restaurant sends out more ambitious dishes: a starter of beetroot-cured sea trout, lifted by pickled cucumber and accompanied by horseradish ice cream shows a solid understanding of how flavours work together. Main course could showcase slow-cooked collar of Tamworth pork with buttered swede, cavolo nero and almond pesto, or fish dishes might see poached cod matched with taramasalata, crispy brandade, sea beet, and burnt apple purée. Dessert is a deeply satisfying trio of chocolate delice, honeycomb, and orange sorbet. Superb local artisan cheeses come with home-made Victoria plum jelly, oatcakes and hazelnut fruit bread.<
