The Boathouse doesn't just overlook the river from its attractive decked patio, it makes the thoroughgoing most of the location with Thames buffet cruises too. If you're up for a weekend breakfast as well, there may be no reason to tear yourself away all day. The place is run with a light touch by experienced, friendly staff, and the kitchen deals in smartly engineered modern food that reinterprets the classics, as well as adding some new ideas of Mr Dickens' own. Juicy Cornish mackerel comes in a smoky consommé with mizuna leaves, toasted oats and a 'spaghetti' of gingery pickled turnip, as a possible prelude to a robust main course of tender ox cheek in a big bold beef jus, served with puréed spiced red cabbage, an espuma of smoked potato, and garnishes of pear, crisp-fried kale and pumpkin seeds. Desserts are as ingenious as everything that precedes them, best seen when a rich blood-orange polenta cake appears, accompanied by dehydrated milk crackers and cream cheese ice cream, the dish then copiously dressed at the table with blood-orange and sumac tea. Incidentals like breads and the sablé-based pumpkin mousse petit four help to raise the game. Wines listed by style include a fair few by the glass.
