New York-born chef Jun Tanaka is no stranger to fans of TV cheffery and here he is in his first solo venture, so-called, with irresistible logic, as it's the ninth place he's worked in. After two decades in starry, fine-dining gaffs, Tanaka eschews ostentation here for a relaxed, cool decor that’s all exposed brick walls, decorated concrete, floorboards and mirrors, dotted with eye-catching statement pieces like glass pendant lighting or metal wine cages and wine glass racks, while leather banquettes and café-style chairs provide the comforts alongside mahogany or white marble-topped tables. A modern menu of sharing dishes focuses on light Mediterranean ideas underpinned by a classic French influence and bursting with seasonality and flavour. Dividing into nine categories (there's that number again), the roster's focus treats vegetable dishes with the same importance as everything else, serving up the likes of beetroot tarte Tatin with feta and pine nuts. In-vogue snacks like punchy oxtail croquettes or duck Scotch egg get the tastebuds fired up, then osso buco tortellini might come with hazelnut gremolata; big-hitting meat dishes could see salted beef cheeks alongside oxtail consommé and January King cabbage. Desserts are straight-up classics, such as an absolute-perfection tarte Tatin with rosemary ice cream.
