The well-groomed Georgian townhouse – set on the corner of a leafy little residential Kensington street - might feel like just another smart-neighbourhood gaff, but the savvy foodies hereabouts know its pedigree and knack for attracting talented young chefs. Ben Murphy fits the mould to a tee, a Pierre Koffmann alumnus and certainly a chef to watch. His light, modern cooking delivers clever combinations of texture and bold flavour, all deftly engineered with invention and flair and dressed-to-thrill presentation. There’s often whit too; take petit four miniatures like a sensational Bakewell tart cone and lemon meringue lollipop. His is fine-tuned cooking, and, though light carte portions don’t perhaps talk the full three courses for large appetites, they excel on the tasting menu, while the fixed-price lunch is a bargain at this pitch. Standout dishes might include an opener of perfect agnolotti (pasta), stuffed with rich, big-flavoured oxtail and truffle, and to follow, sea-fresh turbot teamed with verjus, turnip and coriander. To finish, why not a classic pistachio soufflé la Tante Claire. A first-class service team and interior of pastel grey with leather seating and modern artwork spreads across the intimate dining areas and aptly fulfils the smart-chic brief. A cracking cheese trolley and labour-of-love wine list deliver top billing too.
