It may be designed to look like a colonial-era Indian gentlemen's club, but there's nothing retro about this restaurant's inventive new-wave Indian cooking. Soft-shelled crab Jhalmuri is deep-fried in crunchy spiced batter and matched with puffed rice, samphire and coriander, while an expertly spiced kid goat methi keema is rich, comforting and fragrant with fenugreek leaves. Elsewhere, wild boar vindaloo, or wild muntjac biryani with pomegranate and mint raita catch the eye, while game lovers might go for quail seekh kebab with chutney. Dessert is a perfect fusion of Anglo-Indian ideas: zingy rhubarb chutney atop a sweet ras malai cheese dumpling soaked in cardamon-infused milk with crushed pistachios and almonds.
