Wines by the glass

Enshrouded by the New Forest, the Montagu is a brick-built, ivy-clad 17th-century hostelry. An opening raviolo filled with late season lamb is all about the unctuous, seductive meat, its richness backed up by grilled broccoli and roasted onions in a rosemary-scented broth. That could be followed by slow-poached Cornish monkfish, its firm texture gently emphasised by a rich sauce of smoked bacon and red wine, and by a strongly seasoned accompaniment of crisp potato terrine and a little grilled lettuce, or maybe Alresford roe deer with a croquette of its brisket, glazed beetroot and parsnip purée. To finish try the white chocolate and passionfruit cheesecake with orange sorbet.
