Tucked away in leafy Maple Road, The French Table is the kind of smart neighbourhood outfit we'd all love on our doorstep. Dressed-to-impress modern French cooking punches above its weight on a fixed-price repertoire buoyed by a five-course taster. Witness celeriac velouté with almonds, smoked shitake and a poached egg, perhaps followed by roasted pollock with a lemon and herb crust, wild garlic and fresh pea risotto, asparagus and a dill beurre blanc. Breads are a triumph, while pastry impresses too – no surprise with its sibling boulangerie/patisserie, The French Tarte, bang next door – as seen in a chocolate moelleux with spiced orange and vanilla ice cream.
