In a leafy quarter of Surbiton, The French Table is the sort of smart neighbourhood eatery we'd all like on our patch. Well-conceived modern French cooking is delivered via three-course, prix-fixe lunch and evening menus, supplemented by a five-course taster. Cromesquis of ham hock and red onion with Puy lentil and truffle salad, caramelised confit garlic and truffle vinaigrette opens the show, ahead of loin and shoulder of lamb with aubergine purée, ratatouille, spiced barley couscous and almonds, and lavender jus. Pastry skills are top-drawer here - as you'd hope with its sibling boulangerie/patisserie, The French Tarte, next door - as seen in baked chocolate tart with macerated orange, mandarin coulis and Seville orange ice cream.
