A Plymouth landmark for the past 150 years, you certainly can't miss the Duke of Cornwall hotel with its imposing Gothic exterior and Corinthian-style pillars. The recently refurbished restaurant is suitably elegant, with its domed ceiling, chandelier and clothed tables. The kitchen works a modern European repertoire with a decent showing of West Country ingredients. Chicken liver parfait, blueberries, pickled shallots and toasted focaccia is a well executed classic and it might precede a well-timed stone bass with brown shrimp, lemon and herb-crushed new potatoes. To finish, poached rhubarb is a harmonious partner to ginger ice cream.
